Why use lime plaster?

Lime plaster is the perfect option for solid wall homes because it is durable, flexible and breathable.

Solid wall buildings were designed to breath. Lime is beneficial because it is vapour permeable, which means that moisture can escape the building, rather than getting trapped inside it. Using impermeable materials on the inside or on the outside of the building, such as cement render, water repellent coatings, gypsum plaster,  and plastic-based paints, can cause moisture to build up, which can lead to damp.

Damp is often associated with older buildings, but many times, the problem is that inappropriate materials have been used, causing the damp. Other sources of damp can be traced e.g., to leaking pipes, gutters and roofs. Regular maintenance is therefore important, in addition to using appropriate materials.

Lime plaster is an excellent option where insulation is needed in homes with solid walls. Insulating lime plaster mixes can be applied by itself or in combination with other insulating material to create an insulated and breathable home.

Lime is also more historically accurate than modern materials, which is valuable in and of itself, but also means that it may be required for listed buildings.
